Udaipur is one of the few places where “lake view” is not a marketing trick. Palaces, ghats and rooftop dinners make it a romantic default for good reason.

Homestays, villas and stays chosen by what matters most to you in Udaipur.
Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the new capital of the Mewar kingdom, and it has been enchanting visitors ever since. Hills ring the city, and lakes (Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Udai Sagar) sit among its palaces and havelis, giving it a softer, more romantic feel than the desert cities of Rajasthan.
The City Palace complex rises above Lake Pichola’s eastern shore, with the white Lake Palace and the island palace of Jag Mandir floating on the water in front. The effect, especially at sunset, is why Udaipur tops so many honeymoon and heritage wish lists.
October to March is the most popular season, with clear skies and pleasant weather for boat rides, palace visits and rooftop dinners. The cultural calendar is busy too: the Mewar Festival (spring) celebrates Gangaur with processions, and winter brings craft fairs at Shilpgram.
Summers are hot, but the lakes keep evenings gentler than in other cities. The monsoon (July to September) is a hidden highlight: when the lakes fill and the hills turn green, Udaipur is at its most atmospheric, and prices tend to be lower. Just be prepared for humidity and occasional heavy showers.
For the classic postcard stay, look at Lake Pichola’s ghats and the Old City, where heritage havelis and boutique hotels sit close to the City Palace and the rooftop restaurants. You can walk to most of the sights, though lanes are narrow, so check how to reach your hotel with luggage.
Fateh Sagar is calmer, with breezy evenings and sunset walks along the lake. Hiran Magri is quieter and residential, a short ride from the old city with newer hotels and easier parking. Palace hotels on the lakes and surrounding hills are the splurge choice, and they sell out early for winter weekends.
The old city is best explored on foot, and you’ll often find the lakes, ghats and temples within a short walk of each other. For farther sights, autos, e-rickshaws and app cabs are available, and many visitors hire a car with a driver for day trips.
Maharana Pratap Airport (Dabok) is around 20–25 kilometres from the centre, and Udaipur City station has trains to Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and other cities. Highways link Udaipur to Ahmedabad, Jodhpur and Chittorgarh.
Begin with the City Palace museum, then take a boat ride on Lake Pichola at golden hour. Visit Jagdish Temple, wander the lanes of the old city, and stop at the Saheliyon-ki-Bari gardens and Fateh Sagar Lake. Evening cultural shows at Bagore Ki Haveli are a popular introduction to Rajasthani music and dance.
For views, head up to the Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh) at sunset. Shilpgram is a living craft village on the western edge, and the Ahar cenotaphs show another side of Mewar history. Many guesthouses also run cooking classes, which pair well with a market visit.
Mewari cuisine leans on dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi and laal maas, with thalis that range from simple to royal. Udaipur is also known for its rooftop restaurants, where lake and palace views are as important as the food. Try lassi, kachori and Rajasthani sweets at local shops.
The bazaars around the old city sell miniature paintings, puppets, block-printed textiles, silver jewellery and leather goods. Look for work by local artists, ask about the materials and bargain gently. Quality varies, so compare a few places before buying.
From Udaipur you can reach Kumbhalgarh Fort (roughly 85 kilometres) and the intricate Ranakpur Jain temples in a long day, or spread them over two. Eklingji and Nagda, Haldighati and the pilgrimage town of Nathdwara are shorter outings, and Chittorgarh makes a good fort stop on the way to Jaipur or Delhi.
A few tips: sunset rooftops fill up quickly in high season, so reserve ahead; carry cash for boat tickets and small shops; and dress modestly in temples. Winter weekends and the wedding season push prices up, so book your hotel early.
